MAY DAY'S ENDING

(Repeat after each verse)
Farewell we bid to winter, for the summer at last is free,
Oh the summer now at last is free and the darkness it shall flee!

(Verses)
Merry, how merry oh we have been, from dawn, to sea and hill,
And so united here we stand, before Jack now solemn and still.
No more a-rumble do the drums, or a-jingle the bells of gold,
But as we stand with a leaf in each hand, a new season does unfold!

Melted, now melted have our memories old, gone with the silent snow,
Which over our cold and cheerless land, how we remember it did throw,
And at our thoughts we shudder of past evenings lost of light,
As the howling winds of winter round our windowpanes did bite.

Glorious, so glorious and warm will be, those days soon long and bright,
And we’ll welcome a sun rising high in the sky whilst the skylark takes its flight,
And the land will blossom bountifully, until the harvest it shall see,
Then rejoice will we, and joyous we’ll be as splendid the summer it shall be.

Jack, oh lye easy now Jack, whilst our homage we give gladly to thee,
And sleep, as you sleep the renewal of life and your rebirth we can now foresee,
For after the summer another winter will prowl, and its ferocious face will be seen,
But we will still stand with a leaf in each hand, until the return of your spirit of green!
